Alaska Moms for Custodial Justice

Alaska Moms for Custodial Justice, founded in 2000 by survivor Paige Hodson, is a grassroots group of citizens concerned with the health, safety and well-being of children who were direct or indirect victims of domestic violence and have now become involved in child custody litigation in Alaska’s family court system.

We provide information, support, networking, education and referrals for protective parents who have lost custody or are currently facing custodial challenges due to any or all of the following: an abusive ex-partner who gained or challenged custody through allegations of PAS or other misogynistic and bogus mental health theories, court reliance and use of "experts" with little to no training in domestic violence dynamics, court personnel that pathologize protective parents natural anxieties about their children's safety, limited monetary resources, "friendly parent" leanings in the courts or evaluation process, and gender bias.

We believe the first step on the path to healing and improving safety to protective parents and children is connections with their local domestic violence and sexual assault agencies and we continue to network and support those entities. The second step is networking with other parents with similar experiences to gain empowerment and valuable information to actively participate in their cases to better protect the children.

Alaska Moms for Custodial Justice has been instrumental in the following state projects:

  • co-writing and lobbying to passage 2004 Alaska rebuttable presumption legislation making it more difficult for abusive parents to obtain custody and unsupervised visitation of child witnesses and victims
  • co-sponsored and organized a pre-screening and panel discussion of the PBS documentary, "Breaking the Silence:  Children's Stories"
  • raised concerns about abuser’s obtaining custody of children with the Alaska Commission on Judicial Conduct. The commission was shown the award-winning documentary "Small Justice: Little Justice in America’s Family Courts" and updated on the "Breaking the Silence: Children’s Stories" event.
  • introduced the need for and concept of state-specific research (now in progress) on the link between domestic violence and child custody litigation, and systemic problems with abusers gaining advantages in custody litigation (modeled on Battered Mothers Testimony Projects from Massachusetts & Arizona)
  • raised issues with the court system as to the appropriateness and qualifications of trainers providing education to the state judiciary on domestic violence and custody.
